For those seeking affordable mental-health care in the South Bay, JFK University’s Sunnyvale Community Counseling Center (CCC) can be a vital resource. Providing assistance on a variety of mental-health issues in both group and one-on-one settings, the Sunnyvale CCC offers sliding-scale fees that make its services available to everyone, regardless of ability to pay.
The Sunnyvale CCC is able to extend to its clientele high-level services at an affordable price by staffing the center with graduate students from the Counseling Psychology program at JFK University’s College of Psychology. These graduate-student counseling trainees are supervised by professionals licensed in clinical psychology, marriage and family therapy, professional clinical counseling, and social work.
In this way, JFK University’s Community Counseling Centers are able to bring much needed mental-health services to underserved Bay Area communities, while simultaneously training the next generation of mental-health practitioners. By exposing counseling trainees to the rewards of serving underprivileged individuals and communities and to the desperate need for quality care in underserved regions, they are also instilled with the importance of public service and the many benefits a socially conscious mindset can bring not only to clients but to practitioners themselves.
In an effort to best serve the specific needs of the community, Sunnyvale CCC has tailored its services to address the most pressing issues facing local residents. This includes providing therapy and counseling to adults, children, couples, and families across a wide spectrum of topics, from family conflicts to anxiety and depression.
It also means reaching clients where they live, work, and go to school. The Sunnyvale CCC serves every elementary school in the Cupertino Union School District through the Center’s school-based program. Counselors-in-training provide individual as well as group therapy to the CUSD students at the school site. Additionally, the Sunnyvale Center operates a program at the Saratoga Senior Center, where it provides supportive counseling to the elder clients.
The Sunnyvale CCC expands the reach of JFK University’s highly successful Community Counseling Centers into the South Bay, making high-quality mental-health services available to residents who otherwise would lack access to needed care. By assisting in the development of healthier individuals and more cohesive families, the CCCs help lay the foundation for a stronger community. It is just one of the many ways in which JFK University gives back to the entire Bay Area while providing invaluable experience for its students.
