Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that involves life-long deficits in social interaction, communication, and behavior. In this introductory course, you will become familiar with the history of ASD, DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, best practices for assessment and tools, and an overview of established treatments. This course provides an essential foundation for understanding further intermediate courses on assessment, diagnosis, or treatments for ASD.

Required Readings: **Please note participants may be asked to set up a free account to access some of the below modules. **

  • Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-F) “Neurodevelopmental Disorders” pages 31-86; with special attention to Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • The National Standards Project, National Standards Project Phase 2 (2015). Pages 41-73, Section 3 Research Findings
  • National Professional Development Center on Autism Spectrum Disorders, Evidence-based practices.
  • Autism Internet Modules, module of your choice (this can be related to assessment or intervention).

Instructor Bio

Larissa D. Terry, PsyD, BCBA-D, is a Clinical Psychologist and Board Certified Behavior Analyst Doctoral, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities. Dr. Terry completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the UC Davis MIND Institute. She was a staff psychologist at Regional Center of the East Bay where she assisted in establishing their first Early Intervention Autism Clinic for children under age 3. She maintains a private practice in Walnut Creek, California providing assessment, early intervention diagnostic clinics, parent training, and behavioral consultation for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities.

JFKU-CE is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists, by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) to provide continuing education for MFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs & LEPs and by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) to provide continuing education for RNs. JFKU-CE maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

The webpage will refresh to your course page. Click “Launch Course” to begin!

Technical Requirements:

Before you begin an online course, please make sure your computer has a broadband Internet connection. A dial-up connection is not sufficient. The online courses require that you use the most recent Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Firefox Internet browsers, which you can download from these links: PC/Mac: Chrome (newer Macs only) or Firefox (Macs over 2 years old). Safari is not compatible. Adobe Flash player is also required and can be downloaded by clicking here.

Course Completion Time Limit

You will have 90 days to complete the online course from the date of registration. You may request 30 day extensions for a fee of $35. E-mail (conted@jfku.edu) or call us (800.557.1384) to begin this process. Extensions take a few days , an email will be sent to you when the extension access has been granted.

Accessing Certificate

Successful completion of the final exam and submission of the course evaluation unlocks your certificate. Please select the “Retrieve My Course Details” button to print or save your certificate. *You may need to refresh the course dashboard webpage for this button to populate.
