This seven hour course provides an overview of the significant changes in the Family Therapy field since 1950. It will then offer a method for comparing the major schools of Family Therapy across seven domains: the way a symptom is defined, the use of a normative model, the nature of “resistance,” the theory of change, the unit of treatment, the goals of therapy, and the therapist’s use of self. This comparison allows the practitioner to be intentional about which schools to study, practice and integrate into their clinical practice. A blueprint for the first interview will be taught as well four aspects of the therapist’s use of self: awareness, attachment style, disclosure, and development.
