The MA degree can be completed in 7 quarters if students start in the fall quarter. However, students pursuing the Holistic Nutrition Specialization and/or the Graduate Certificate in Holistic Health Coaching will need at least one additional quarter to complete the required electives.
Multicultural Awareness and Competency in Consulting Diverse Sporting Populations
The purpose of this workshop is to enhance attendees’ cultural awareness and competencies for consulting with diverse sporting populations. Through interactive group conversations, experiential and reflective activities, attendees will deepen their understanding of sport multiculturalism, reflective practice, and reflexivity as critical to client-consultant relations. Further attendees will develop a deeper awareness of ways to promote socially just sport environments, inclusive language, the role their social identities play in their consulting practice, intersectional microaggressions and their impact on health and well being, and strategies for continual cultural awareness and development.
SPORT PSYCHOLOGY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SEMINARS (PDS)
The sport psychology Professional Development Seminars (PDS) are intended to give our students and the community at large an extra perspective of what the world of sport psychology looks like. We bring highly respected professionals from the field to speak on different topics related to sport psychology. These topics could include working with specific populations (endurance athletes, para-athletes, youth and their parents, the Military, coaches, professional athletes, Cirque du Soleil, and performers of all kinds), learning about important psychological concepts in sport (anger and aggression, self-awareness, balance and burnout, motivation, acceptance, commitment, and mindfulness), or learning important entrepreneurial concepts (how much to charge, how to market yourself, how to find a niche, and general facts about running a business). The PDS events also help the students build their network and resource list by connecting with the speakers.
Leeja Carter, Ph.D.
Leeja Carter, Ph.D. moved to Brooklyn, NY in 2014 by way of Chicago, IL and Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Carter believes sport and exercise are not only personally enhancing, but can transform families and communities. A feminist sport psychology practitioner and women’s health advocate, her work addresses historical and contemporary representations of Black women’s ‘strength,’ culturally sensitive health and sport psychology approaches for people of color, and gendered racism in sport. Dr. Carter received a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University, a Post-Master’s Certification in Exercise Science from California University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. in Kinesiology with a concentration in the Psychology of Human Movement from Temple University. In 2015 Dr. Carter created the PEAK Program at Long Island University – Brooklyn (LIU): an all-in-one program that combines research, applied sport psychology practice, and student training for the LIU and Brooklyn communities. In 2018 she was awarded the Fulbright Specialist Scholar award to serve as a Visiting Scholar at London South Bank University (LSBU) in their Sport and Exercise Science Research Center (SESRC) on the project titled, “Interdisciplinary Methods to Addressing Health Behaviors Among Women and Girls in London.” Recently she began an online video series, serving as producer, titled, “Beyond Me Too – Sport (BMTSport)” which shares stories of resistance, strategies, advice, and hopes for making sports a safe, inclusive, and equitable space for all. Dr. Carter has been nationally and internationally recognized for her work. Also, she’s received funding for several of her projects, presented talks, keynotes, and research presentations nationally and internationally, as well as written papers and book chapters on topics related to racism in sport, sport feminism, and cultural competence in sport psychology. When Dr. Carter isn’t conducting research or filming for BMTSport, she is enjoying yoga, cooking, or meditation.
