Ora Prochovnick, JD

Professor College of Law
JD Program

Professor Prochovnick is a full-time member of the law school’s core faculty since 2008 and is the director of clinical and internship programs for the College of Law. She was previously a professor at New College of California College of Law for 21 years, and was a partner and founding member of Bayside Legal Advocates, a woman-run community law office in the Mission District of San Francisco, where her practice focused on tenant advocacy, non-traditional family law and civil rights litigation.

Professor Prochovnick has been frequently recognized for her pro bono contributions, and has received many awards from the State Bar and local bar associations and from community agencies in recognition of her expertise and legal assistance, particularly to the low-income community in the area of housing advocacy, assistance to persons with AIDS, and LGBT rights. She was the recipient of the 1993 State Bar Pro Bono Service Award, the 2003 San Francisco Bar Association Award of Merit, was named a Northern California Super Lawyer by San Francisco Magazine in 2004 and 2005, and received the Transgender Law Center’s 2008 Community Ally award. In 2014, she received the Harry Morrison Award for Distinguished Teaching from JFK University. Professor Prochovnick has been a frequent presenter at workshops and seminars for both legal professionals and the general public.

Professor Prochovnick is a member of the Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom, the National Lawyers’ Guild, the National Lesbian and Gay Law Association, and the S.F. and East Bay Tenants’ Bar. She has previously served on the board of directors of the AIDS Legal Referral Panel and on the board of the Eviction Defense Collaborative, and is currently a co-chair of Our Family Coalition and a member of the “Brain Trust” of the National Center for Lesbian Rights.
