How do I make an appointment?
There are three ways to set up an appointment:
By Phone: The easiest way is to call the center at 925.969.3530 if you're an East Bay student (Pleasant Hill and Berkeley Art Annex) and 408.874.7792 if you attend JFKU in Campbell. If you get our voice mail, leave your name, phone number and several days and times that work for you. One of the instructors will return your call, usually within 24 hours.
In person: Stop by the center. If we're not in session, we can book an appointment. If we're working with a student, you can slip a note under the door or call.
By email: You can also email us with your request. Just click on the following link: asc@jfku.edu
But every time I call, I get the answering machine.
When we work with students, we let voice mail pick up so that we can give 100% of our attention. We'll do the same with you. Leave your information; we'll call you back - promise.
How much does it cost?
One-on-one instruction and workshops are free to registered students, faculty and staff.
How long are the appointments?
The sessions are 45 minutes long.
What are your hours?
We're open six days a week. Our schedule varies from quarter to quarter, so check our flyers for specifics. An instructor is on site in Campbell once a week and available by phone, fax or email the rest of the week.
But what if I can't get to the center before classes?
We've thought of that too. Students who live far away or have schedules that make it difficult to come in can send their papers via fax or email, and we will send a message back and discuss it on the phone. The call's on us.
How many times can I come in?
You may book appointments as often as once a week, twice if you have learning or physical disabilities and are registered with the Office of Disability Services. You can contact the Director of Disability Services at 925.969.3447 or send an email by clicking on the following link:
access@jfku.edu.
What if I need extra help, but I don't have a learning disability?
We want to give everyone a chance to use the services, so we only book one appointment per student a week. However, if you would like a second appointment, you can call the night before or day of, and if there is an appointment available, we will be happy to meet with you.
What if I have a long paper?
If you have a paper that is eight pages or longer, we suggest that you drop it off (there's a drop off/pick up container to the left of our door), email or fax your paper in advance. Just be sure to let us know so that we can book an appointment time to read your paper in advance. Also, be sure to let us know what the assignment is, when it's due, and what issues you'd like us to focus on.
What if I have to cancel or reschedule an appointment?
If you must cancel or reschedule, we'd appreciate 24-hour advance notice, if possible. That way we can give your appointment to another student. Even if you need to cancel the day of, we appreciate the call. People who chronically cancel last-minute may lose their eligibility for center services.
What about privacy issues?
As a rule, what you say in this room stays in this room. Our goal, however, is to teach you as effectively as we can. To do this, we occasionally need to consult professors about their course requirements and/or your writing needs.
Can you help with presentations?
Absolutely! Presentations are like verbal papers. They need organization, clarity and development too.
I heard that JFKU uses APA citation style. What is that and can you help me learn it?
There are different ways to cite academic references. JFKU mostly uses APA, which stands for the American Psychological Association. The Academic Support Center provides a truncated handout that explains the basic APA guidelines and reviews other issues such as paraphrasing, formatting and grammar. Copies are available at the ASC, Liberal Arts Office and libraries. We also recommend our Frequently Asked Questions about APA.
For more complicated citation and formatting issues, such as creating a table of contents, you can call or email us at 925.969.3530 or
asc@jfku.edu.
Is it okay to tape our sessions?
Most definitely. Many of us discover what we want to say while we're talking and then forget our ideas when we sit down to write. If this sounds like you, pick up a tape recorder and feel free to bring it in with you.
I have so many papers and so little time. Can you help me organize my time?
Sure! Many students come into the center early in the quarter for help charting out their assignment due dates. That way you can take advantage of scheduling appointments with the center in advance to help you stay on track.
Is it possible to assess my writing ability before the crunch of assignments?
Yes. It can be most helpful to bring in previous assignments, graded papers or your admissions essay so that we can evaluate both your process and product.
