About the Academic Support Center
The Academic Support Center can help you at any stage of the writing process; if you're blocked and just need help getting started, if you'd like feedback on a draft, or if you just have a few quick editing questions before you turn in a paper.
Whether you are returning to school after decades away or an experienced writer who needs a second pair of eyes, our goal is to help you become a stronger and more independent writer. When you bring in a draft, we look for patterns of strength and difficulty and offer suggestions for revision. You learn to recognize and correct your own difficulties.
This is different from proofreading or editing your paper. Editors comb through a paper and correct every misplaced comma, missing transition or dangling participle. In other words, they do the work for you. When they are done, your final draft may have fewer errors, but your skill as a writer has not improved.
Our services set John F. Kennedy University apart from other universities where writing centers are staffed mostly by undergraduate students with little or no formal training. Here you will work with post-graduate writing instructors who have teaching experience and extensive training; we understand the process from the inside out.
In addition to one-on-one instruction, we offer quarterly workshops that cover the following topics:
- Getting the Most Out of Your Reading
- Critical Thinking
- The Process of Writing
- The Research Paper, Avoiding Plagiarism, and
- Time Management.
Our schedule varies slightly from quarter to quarter, so please look for flyers at the Academic Support Center, Library and Student Lounge.
