garden The JFK University Sustainability, Health and Education Garden is pleased to offer a series of free garden workshops for the public taught by Jerris Hogue, MA, alumnus of the Holistic Health Education MA Degree Program and a Master Gardener with over 30 years of gardening and landscaping experience.

All workshops FREE and open to the public. They are held, weather permitting, at the garden located on the southeast corner of the JFK University campus at 100 Ellinwood Way in Pleasant Hill. Click here for a map and directions to the campus.

Build a Garden Box

A raised garden box can provide an individual with all the vegetables they can eat in a year. Learn how to construct a redwood garden box including methods for gopher control and soil enrichment including composting for optimal growing conditions. Location, water requirements, and planting methods will be covered. A garden box will be constructed on site and building plans will be shared.

Spring is Here! Planning and Planting a Spring Garden

Proper soil preparation, irrigation methods, and crop selection for planting a spring garden for a summer harvest. Succession planting and intercropping will be covered. Attracting beneficial insects and creating a sustainable ecological garden environment are a focus of this workshop.

Fundamentals of Composting: Turn Your Garbage into Gold

Soil supplementation and composting are covered in this workshop. Areas of focus include: how to build a compost bin, how to use compost in your garden, and compost and manure tea.
