John F. Kennedy University invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the School of Law available as of January 2010.

The law school's mission is to provide a challenging and comprehensive legal education in a supportive learning environment to a nontraditional and diverse community of learners dedicated to the professional, ethical practice of law and the pursuit of social justice. Accredited by the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State Bar of California, JFKU School of Law offers part-time (four-year) day and evening programs for a diverse student body of working adults with varied life experience, with sites at both the Berkeley and Pleasant Hill campuses.

As a senior academic administrator for the School of Law, the Dean will report directly to the Provost. The Dean must have proven ability to provide overall leadership for the School and be familiar with the issues and challenges within a law school and within a private institution. The Dean is responsible for providing leadership for the school; recruiting, supervising and evaluating faculty and staff; planning, developing, and evaluating all programs; assessing teaching and learning; overseeing student advising, recruiting and admission; preparing and monitoring budgets; and handling State Bar accreditation.

The ideal candidate for this position will have the following qualifications and qualities:
  • Five - ten years of significant professional achievement in the legal profession, either in practice or in academic administration and teaching (or both);
  • Hold a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and be admitted to practice law in one or more jurisdictions;
  • Have experience with effective academic and financial administration, fundraising, classroom teaching, and collaboration with faculty; and
  • Be committed to promoting a multi-cultural community of learners; understand the value of diversity as a component of a well-rounded legal education.

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act requires the distribution of an annual security report to all current faculty, staff, and students and notice of its availability to prospective students, faculty, and staff. The annual security report includes statistics for the previous three years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus, in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by John F. Kennedy University, and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus or center. The report also includes institutional policies concerning campus security such as policies concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, and the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, and other matters.
