| Demystifying Neuropsychology: An Introduction for Clinicians | ||||||||||||||||||||
Neuropsychology is a rapidly growing and important field. As more soldiers return from war after sustaining brain injuries and as families cope with children who have ADHD, other developmental disorders or sustained mild brain injuries in sports, therapists are turning to neuropsychology for insight on issues that, until recently, have gone unrecognized and untreated. As a result, it is becoming essential for therapists to familiarize themselves with this discipline and the best ways to integrate it into practice. This course provides an introduction to neuropsychology and neuropsychological assessment. Basic principles of neuroanatomy as well as operating assumptions and models of neuropsychology as they relate to human behavior, cognition and emotion will be discussed. The effects of major pathologies, trauma and other common neurological events will also be reviewed. Participants will become more adept at recognizing when a neurological or medical problem might be influencing a presenting psychological disorder, and participants will learn how to perform basic neurological and mental status exam screenings and the appropriate language to use when making referrals. An emphasis will be placed in understanding elements of the dominant neuropsychological theories and the Process Approach to understanding behavior. Instructor Biography ![]() |
