Course Description

This course provides an introduction to Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) for clinicians who are interested in learning more about this treatment and how to apply it to a veteran population. Research has shown that PE is a powerful and effective tool for healing from trauma, leading the VA to select it as one of two therapies required in a national initiative to train VA clinicians in empirically-supported treatments for PTSD. PE is an 8-12 week structured therapy that helps patients emotionally process their traumatic experience, utilizing both in vivo and imaginal exposure techniques.

This course will provide an overview of the theory and research behind PE, as well as a session-by-session guide on how to conduct this therapy. Participants will leave with a better understanding of the structure and process of this therapy, and specific knowledge about how to conduct both in vivo and imaginal exposure with veterans. Material will be presented through the use of videos, case discussions and role plays.

This class can be taken as a standalone or as part of our Treatment Strategies for Returning Troops workshop series. Click here for information about the series.
