The 92-unit Transpersonal Psychology specialization emphasizes the counselor's presence, openness and authenticity as being central to the therapeutic process; it views emotional dysfunction as an opportunity for growth and maintains a respect for the client's self-healing capacities. Transpersonal psychotherapists are interested in exploring the interaction and integration of personality, feelings and spirit - empowering their clients to connect with their essential self and to fulfill their soul's purpose. Using traditional psychotherapeutic tools as well as dream work, guided visualization, authentic presence, expressive arts, meditation and more, transpersonal therapists facilitate processes that support dialogue with one's inner wisdom.
By building on the foundations of the transpersonal pioneers, such as C.G. Jung, Stan Grof and Ken Wilber, the Transpersonal Psychology specialization offers students numerous opportunities to immerse themselves in transpersonal inquiry. In keeping with the belief that holistic learning occurs both cognitively and experientially, students explore both group dynamics and their own unfolding in a three-quarter group process sequence. In this context, students work on their personal issues that affect how they relate to others - and to themselves. In their second year, students can choose to specialize in one of three areas: Existential Psychotherapy, Expressive Arts Therapy or Jungian-Archetypal Therapy. This is a two quarter sequence which allows for an in-depth exploration of a clinically relevant area of transpersonal inquiry. In addition, students have the opportunity to explore various spiritual practices, e.g., sitting meditation, Nature-based spirituality, African-based spirituality and accessing spiritual experience through the arts.
