Specialization: Holistic Studies

imageDownload Brochure
The School of Holistic Studies began offering a master's degree in Counseling Psychology with a specialization in Holistic Studies at our Campbell campus in 1999. This master's degree is designed for people who want to become Marriage & Family Therapists, meeting the educational requirements for licensure in the state of California.

The Holistic Studies specialization integrates somatic and transpersonal psychology, building on these two fields of study with the focus of training students to work with a body, mind and spirit approach. In the first year of the program students learn to look deeply at their own psychological issues and develop a keen understanding of who they are, their place in the world and what they will bring to their work with others. The second year is infused with clinical theory and practice as well as continued personal growth and development of clinical competence. The third year students are out in clinical placements either at external sites or at one of the University's counseling centers: Sunnyvale Community Counseling Center or the Center for Holistic Counseling in Oakland.

The degree program requirements include options for emphases that give students depth training in either Buddhist Psychology or Queer Psychology. Each emphasis is made up of 5 courses that give students the ability to develop a specialization in one of these areas in their clinical practice.

Faculty and staff of the Holistic Studies program in Campbell: Sue Ellen Wise, Department Chair; Louise Monsour, Core Faculty; Sheila Henderson, Core Faculty; Nancy Orr, Administrative Assistant.
