Workshops

Integral to the master's degree programs in the Graduate School of Professional Psychology are the six mandatory workshops. These workshops are designed to enhance students' development as professional clinicians or consultants and broaden their future employment opportunities.

CHILD ABUSE ASSESSMENT, REPORTING AND TREATMENT
This workshop covers the following topics: recognizing and assessing physical, emotional and sexual abuse and neglect; legal definitions of child abuse; legal reporting requirements; crisis intervention for the victim, families and abusers; cross-cultural concerns; countertransference issues; and community resources. Meets the requirement of AB141 for seven hours of training for MFT licensure.

DIVERSITY AWARENESS
In this workshop, students engage in activities and discussions designed to increase awareness of diversity issues on both the personal and social levels.

GENERAL CAREER ISSUES AND STRATEGIES
This workshop uses exercises to identify students' values and work style preferences. Students review strategies to expand professional contacts and opportunities, learn techniques for writing effective resumes and cover letters, and get tips for successful interviewing.

MFT CAREER ISSUES AND STRATEGIES
This workshop extends the discussion of personal career goals and provides current information regarding trends and options in the field. Managed health care and its career implications will be highlighted. A panel of agency professionals will be present. The importance of the supervisory experience will be discussed, and students will learn how to interview potential supervisors. Tips for creating successful careers as interns and licensees will be provided, along with updates on BBSE regulations.

HUMAN SEXUALITY
This workshop addresses human sexual behavior pertaining to pairing, sexual orientation, intercourse, reproduction, contraception, abortion, as well as myths and attitudes about sex. Major types of sexual problems and the basic principles and techniques of modern sex therapy will be discussed.

PREPARATION FOR ORGANIZATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY INTERNSHIP
This workshop elicits students' professional goals, work values and preferences. Students will review expectations for their consulting internship and identify specific learning objectives.
