Chats with Faculty

Join us for these weekly chats with the faculty of GSPP's Counseling Psychology Department. There will be a brief presentation at each of these followed by discussion, as well as an opportunity to learn more about the MA Counseling Psychology program.

All chats are held on Wednesdays, 5:30 - 6:30 pm in Room N154 at the Pleasant Hill campus, 100 Ellinwood Way.

The Road to Licensure - Thomas Michahelles, PhD
This talk will outline all the DO-s and DON'T-s needed to require a license as a psychotherapist in California. We will look at education as well as experiential requirements by the licensing boards. We will compare and contrast the LCSW, Licensed Psychologist, and LMFT, with an emphasis on the MFT-licensing process. Licensing laws under consideration, i.e. the LPC and the Drug and Alcohol Counselor, will be briefly touched upon.

Negotiating Social Privilege in Therapy: Healing Dialogs of Empowerment, Justice, and Accountability - Timothy Baima, PhD
This discussion will examine dynamics of power, privilege, and marginalization across several facets of culture including, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, social class, religion, and physical ability. We will consider the affects that disparities of power and privilege have on relationships, including the therapeutic relationship, and how dialog about power and privilege can facilitate healing and growth.
