Museum Studies

This is an exciting time to pursue a graduate degree and career in museum studies. Museums are complex and dynamic public service institutions. To succeed, they need professionals with degrees in museum studies and the skills to make them more responsive to the changing conditions of our diverse society.

John F. Kennedy University's Department of Museum Studies is distinguished by its professionalism, collaborative style, and commitment to social responsibility. Our Berkeley location is convenient, accessible by public tranportation, with plenty of parking. The faculty is comprised of museum professionals who are prominent and active in the field, in addition to being excellent instructors.

We offer both a Master of Arts and Certificate in Museum Studies with specializations in collections management, public programming and administration. Most students complete the certificate in one year and the master's degree in two years if they attend full-time. Part-time students have up to five years to complete either degree.)

Working together in small classes, students explore histories and theories of museums of all disciplines and types. They gain practical on-site experience through site visits and internships in the Bay Area and around the world. They create new models for spirited engagement with diverse audiences, collections and technologies.

We seek highly motivated students from a wide variety of backgrounds who believe museums can make a difference in people's lives. Classes take place from 4pm to 7pm in the evening and on weekends, in order to enable students to work while attending school.
