BA Legal Studies

This degree program fosters critical thinking by focusing on effective written and oral communications as well as specific analytical skills. The Legal Specialty coursework is enhanced by a rich mixture of BA courses in writing, history, government, and social justice. This combination insures that each student develops their understanding of the law, respect for different ways of knowing and a desire for lifelong learning.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to this program, students must have 54 quarter units of transferable college credit. Of the 54 quarter units at least 27 quarter units must be in at least three of the following disciplines.

  • Social and Behavioral Sciences
  • English (English Composition must be completed with a grade of C or higher)
  • Foreign language
  • Mathematics
  • Humanities
  • Natural or Physical Science

How to Apply

Students are admitted on a rolling basis. New students may enter the Legal Studies Program in the Fall or Spring quarters. Applications must be completed two weeks prior to the desired starting quarter. To be considered for admission, the following are required:

  • A completed application form and nonrefundable application fee.
  • A writing sample (attached to the application form).
  • Interview with a faculty advisor.
  • One set of official transcripts of all college work.

Transfer of Legal Specialty Courses:

This transfer policy does not apply to Paralegal Certificate students. All certificate courses must be taken in residency. This transfer policy only applies to students enrolled in the Bachelor's Degree in Legal Studies.

At the discretion of the Legal Studies department, students may be given credit for other legal specialty courses (LSC) taken at another school or university provided the course is also offered in this program. To be eligible to receive credit for a previously-taken LSC all the following must exist:

  • The LSC must be equivalent in content, length and nature to JFK's course
  • The LSC must be from an ABA approved paralegal program and taken within the last 7 years
  • The student must have earned a C or better in the LSC
  • The LSC must carry upper-division academic credit

Up to eight (8) Legal Specialty Courses may be credited towards the BA in Legal Studies.
