Teaching is critical to passing on the knowledge of every human profession, skill, and activity. Those who know how to do something or who understand the principles of a discipline impart that information to people who are new to the field and interested in becoming proficient practitioners.
Credentialed teachers work in the education system that covers public and private elementary, middle, and secondary schools, as well as public and private colleges and universities. Teachers may also act as tutors, both inside and outside the formal education system, providing focused attention on a particular topic or skill development to individuals who seek their help.
Education in elementary, middle, and secondary schools continues to evolve to meet the needs of changing social conditions and to encompass global perspectives. Increasingly, teachers act as facilitators or coaches who use interactive discussions and “hands-on” approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English.
Informal teachers can be anyone with information to share. These individuals may be professionals who share the knowledge they have gained in a specific discipline, practice, subject area, or life skill, or they may have developed a keen interest in a subject that may or may not relate to their occupation. By choosing to share this information with others, they become teachers.
