Law

The United States is a country built on a foundation of laws. As a result, the legal system affects nearly every aspect of our society, from buying a home to crossing the street. Lawyers form the backbone of this system, holding positions of great responsibility with an obligation to adhere to a strict code of ethics. Other workers, such as paralegals (legal assistants), help lawyers in their work and must also behave ethically in their dealings with clients.

Lawyers, also known as attorneys, are the primary professionals in the legal system; they serve as both advocates and advisors. As advocates, they represent one of the parties in a criminal or civil dispute by presenting evidence and arguing in court to support their client. As advisors, they counsel clients regarding legal rights and obligations and suggest courses of action in business and personal matters.

All attorneys research the intent of laws and judicial decisions and apply the law to the specific circumstances faced by their clients.
