Changes in society, business, technology, and the labor market have expanded the role of career development professionals. These consultants and counselors help individuals with career-related issues and decisions. They may be in private practice or employed by businesses and organizations to provide such services to their workers.
Career development includes exploring and evaluating individuals’ education, training, work history, interests, skills, and personality traits; arranging for aptitude and achievement tests; developing job-search skills and strategies; assisting individuals in locating and applying for jobs; and providing support to those who experience job loss, job stress, or other career transition issues.
At JFKU, the
School of Management (SOM) offers the MA in Career Development, one of only a few such programs in the United States. The program combines career theory, management techniques, humanistic psychology, and practical skills that prepare you to assist individuals and groups with career issues, whether they work in businesses, nonprofit organizations, or educational institutions.
Coursework in the program includes career theory, management techniques, humanistic psychology, and practical skills in case management, individual supervision, counseling skills development, administration of a career center, assessment approaches, and counseling forums.
Career development professionals may also benefit from the MA in Organizational Psychology program, available through JFKU’s
Graduate School of Professional Psychology (GSPP), or the Essentials Coaching Certificate, offered by the
School of Education and Liberal Arts (SELA) in cooperation with the
Ford Institute for Integrative Coaching.
