Business is a broad term that refers to the occupations, professions, trades, or activities that each of us pursues every day in the process of making a living. Almost any enterprise may be considered a business, whether it is for-profit, nonprofit, private, or publicly owned.
The United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics identifies twelve industry
supersectors that cover nearly every existing occupation and business endeavor, including:
- construction,
- education and health services,
- financial activities,
- government,
- information (publishing, internet, broadcasting and other media, telecommunications),
- leisure and hospitality,
- manufacturing,
- natural resources and mining,
- other services (such as religious activities, equipment and machine repair, grant-making, death care, personal care, pet care, or photofinishing),
- professional and business services (such consulting, accounting, engineering, computer-based services, architecture, science-based services and research, advertising, or law),
- transportation and utilities, and
- wholesale and retail trade.
