The career of
philosopher may not appear on job boards like Monster.com or at online classified spaces like craigslist, but many disciplines, fields of study, and professions place great value on the qualities of mind, heart, and spirit involved in the study of philosophy. Philosophical principles of reasoning and logic, as well as its examination of the nature of genuine knowledge, contribute to the development of successful business executives, lawyers, managers, artists and creative workers, health care providers, consultants, counselors, therapists, clergy, and many others. In addition, an appreciation of philosophy helps each of us live as ethical human beings who are better prepared to participate in a global and constantly changing culture.
Philosophy examines the “big questions” of life, including how we should live and interact with others and the world, often known as
ethics. As we explore such issues as the nature of reality and the self, we are better able to define ourselves, our aspirations, and our possibilities as individuals, as a culture, and as a species.
At JFK University, the
School of Education and Liberal Arts (SELA) offers a BA in philosophy and religion that employs a history-of-ideas approach to draw from disciplines throughout the humanities. Using examples from literature, anthropology, music, philosophy, art, religion, psychology, and consciousness studies, coursework promotes critical reflection on traditions and transitions, on the degree to which our past inevitably defines us, and on the attempts throughout history to rethink and redefine humanity and its activities. Study includes critical thinking and writing, ways of knowing, and community interaction. By understanding and appreciating the nature of philosophical thought and principles, you will be empowered to vigorously participate in the cultural dialogue through which the future is being brought into existence, no matter how you choose to manifest your particular gifts in the world.
Related programs at the graduate level are available through JFKU’s
School of Holistic Studies (SHS) and include Consciousness and Transformative Studies, Integral Psychology, Integral Theory, Transformative Arts, and Counseling Psychology with specializations in Holistic Studies, Somatic Psychology, and Transpersonal Psychology.
