The paralegal profession is booming! According to National Association for Legal Assistants the paralegal profession is growing at a 30% increase over the next 5 to 8 years.
The paralegal profession is defined by the American Bar Association as:
“A person, qualified by education, training or work experience who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, government agency or other agency and who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible.”
Paralegals perform a wide array of important functions working under the supervision of a lawyer. Their responsibilities include drafting legal documents, handling legal procedures, and working with clients, courts and others outside the law firm or organization. Many paralegals work in civil litigation, assisting lawyers who represent clients in disputes by preparing pleadings and other legal documents that are filed with the court or submitted to opposing counsel, and getting cases ready for mediation, arbitration, trial and appeals.
A paralegal may
not provide legal services directly to the public except as permitted by law.
