Human resource (HR) professionals may be found in organizations of any size. HR generalists need an extensive range of knowledge to handle all aspects of a company’s human capital relationships, including employment, compensation, benefits, training and development, and employee relations. Increasingly, as they become consultants to top executives, human resource professionals move into strategic planning and visionary leadership positions with responsibilities to suggest and change policies.
HR professionals at the director level within a company may supervise several departments. Others specialize as employment and placement managers, recruiters, EEO officers or affirmative action coordinators, employer relations representatives, development specialists, job analysis specialists, employee benefits managers or specialists, employee assistance plan managers, training managers or specialists, or labor relations managers, among other options.

The Graduate School of Professional Psychology (GSPP) recognizes the value of people skills in successful change management within organizations. Human resource professionals can benefit from learning the skills of organizational development, leadership, team building, managing diversity, coaching, managing and resolving conflict, and personal mastery. GSPP degree programs include the MA in Counseling Psychology, the MA in Organizational Psychology, and a certificate in Coaching that increases interpersonal skills, as well as a certificate in Organizational Psychology.
In cooperation with the Ford Institute for Integrative Coaching at JFKU, the School of Education and Liberal Arts (SELA) offers the Essentials Coaching certificate that may be helpful to human resource professionals interested in establishing good organizational relationships and practices.
