Healer

To heal means to become sound or healthy again, to alleviate a person’s distress or anguish, or to correct or put right, as in a dysfunctional, imbalanced, or ineffective situation or relationship. Healing happens not only on the physical level, as when a wound or injury becomes whole again; healing may also be achieved for spirit, mind, heart, emotions, and other aspects of life that may or may not be addressed by physical or medical means. Healing may happen whether or not physical health is restored.

The creative arts, social sciences and philosophies, medicine, communication skills, movement and body-oriented therapies, spiritual practice, ritual, dreams, nutrition, personality assessments, and holistic/integral approaches may be used to support healers and healing within individuals, groups, or whole societies, even if the “cure” for an illness, disease, or situation may not be possible at the current time. Healers may be counselors or therapists with education and experience in many subject areas and therapeutic techniques.

The School of Holistic Studies (SHS) at JFK University offers many programs that support your interest in using your unique talents and abilities to become a healer and/or to help others heal, including holistic health education, consciousness and transformative studies, integral psychology, transformative arts, and counseling psychology. In the School of Holistic Studies, learning takes place within the context of a global culture and a sustainable environment. Using East/West philosophical traditions, our professional degree programs are founded on holistic values of inter-connectedness, compassion, diversity, imagination, and community service.

JFKU's School of Education and Liberal Arts (SELA) also offers foundational programs, certificates, and courses that can contribute to developing skills and abilities as a healer, such as psychology; philosophy and religion; science, health, and living systems; social ecology; East/West spirituality; transpersonal studies; integrative health; multicultural studies; and Essentials Coaching.

Another avenue in this area is provided through the psychology programs available in JFKU's Graduate School of Professional Psychology (GSPP), offering degree and certificate programs in counseling, organizational, and sport psychology.
