Child/Youth Therapist

Child/youth therapists work with individuals, families, and groups to address and treat mental and emotional disorders and to promote optimum mental health in children and young people. From their training in a variety of therapeutic techniques, therapists address a range of issues, including depression, addiction and substance abuse, suicidal impulses, stress management, problems with self-esteem, and family issues, particularly as they affect children and adolescents.

At JFKU, the Graduate School of Professional Psychology (GSPP) prepares you to provide important services within an evolving family and social framework. Choose from the PsyD degree or the MA in Counseling Psychology that offers a specialization in child and adolescent therapy with internships that give you relevant clinical training. You’ll encounter many theoretical approaches to psychological treatment as you increase your self-knowledge through ongoing examination of your personal values, individual strengths and weaknesses, and awareness of diversity and social context.

You may also want to explore the counseling psychology program in the School for Holistic Studies (SHS) , which features specializations in Somatic Psychology, Transpersonal Psychology and Holistic Studies. The curriculum provides solid academic training in counseling skills and includes coursework in the area of child therapy. It also strongly emphasizing self-exploration, personal growth, and the integration of body, mind and spirit.
