In this series of large-scale drawings, abstracted imagery suggestive of roots, veins or channels symbolically invokes the “nierika” of Huichol shamanic teachings – the link that connects our spirit to the four directions and the upper and lower worlds. The drawings are made using paint stick or compressed charcoal to build a layered surface of intersecting lines that is then manipulated by rubbing or erasing to create wavering patterns of light and dark that evoke the flow of water, substrata of the earth, or interconnectivity of neural pathways. Using the process of drawing as a conduit to the imaginal mind, these tangles of fluid shadow and sinuous lines map the energetic movement of breath and body as it traverses the liminal space between dreaming and awake.
