Law Student Opportunities

After the second year of study, students are encouraged to obtain practical experience at either our on-site Elder Law Clinic or through placement with government agencies, public interest firms/clinics or private law firms. During this experience, students engage in a wide array of legal activities - legal research, drafting legal documents, client and witness interviewing, and trial preparation. Participation may be voluntary or for academic credit.

The Elder Law Clinic is staffed by a Director and students from the JFKU School of Law. The Director and students interview every client who seeks assistance, and if appropriate, the Clinic then undertakes representation. Issues may be resolved with phone calls, letters and negotiation, or require complex, long-term activity, such as litigation. If the Clinic cannot handle the matter, it finds the appropriate agency or lawyer to do so and shepherds the client through the transition.
