Psychopharmacology (3 unit)
Course Description
This online course prepares therapists to provide guidance and support to clients whose treatment currently includes or might one day include pharmacotherapy. Participants will learn about:
- the purposes, advantages and limitations of specific medications so they can better educate their clients and interact more credibly and effectively with psychiatrists and prescribing physicians.
- research that highlights the effects of psychotropic medications on various groups including children, the elderly, women and different racial and ethnic populations.
- evaluating the usefulness of various medications in conjunction with other treatment approaches.
After taking this course, participants will have a working knowledge of the different categories of psychotropic medications and will be able to provide an integrated approach for clients whose treatment includes pharmacotherapy.

Instructor Biography
Giovanna Morelli, LCSW, is a clinical social worker who has specialized in addictions for the past 20 years and currently works with families in crisis. She has developed prevention and early intervention programs for children and adolescents in schools, hospitals, county agencies and non-profit organizations. Giovanna received her training in pharmacology from Johnson Institute and UC San Diego Medical School, and currently teaches psychopharmacology at JFK University, UC Santa Cruz and CSU Hayward.
