The Asian Pacific Institute was chartered in 1985 by the Board of Regents of John F. Kennedy University to "promote educational and commercial relations between the United States and Asian countries and to develop an increased awareness and understanding among Americans and Asians of their respective cultures and values."

Since that time, the Institute has developed and sponsored a variety of programs that develop cultural competency and foster cross-cultural understanding as an integral part of the educational process.

In 2007, the Institute was renamed the Dr. John B. Tsu Asian Pacific Institute in honor of its founding director. At that time, in recognition of his leadership and sustained contribution of the University, the Institute also was rededicated to the cause of education and public service that Dr. Tsu so tirelessly promoted during his lifetime.
