Breakout Sessions

CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS IN DISASTER INTERVENTION
Sandra Mattar, PsyD, Associate Professor Doctoral Psychology
Graduate School of Professional Psychology

The threat of disasters is an ever-present reality, and the way we respond to the immediate aftermath is crucial in the psychosocial recovery from trauma. Understanding the cultural factors that affect how people respond to trauma is imperative to help an increasingly diverse population. We will explore the impact of disasters on marginalized communities, the most effective ways of intervention, as well as systemic barriers and psychosocial needs that impede progress to improve culturally-sensitive care provision. CE Credit pending approval.

EASY ROSES FOR A BUSY LIFE
Martine Ham, MBA and Paula Szloboda, RN, MA, MBA, Core Faculty/Holistic Health Education
School of Holistic Studies

As a consulting Rosarian with the American Rose Society, Martine will describe garden techniques that will help you start or expand the beauty in your life with roses. Paula will describe the history and future vision of our new JFKU Garden. Perfect care techniques will keep the work to a minimum while the simple pleasure of flowers will blossom... literally. Actual "JFK" rose bushes will be planted during class and a garden meditation walk will follow the Breakout Sessions.

WONDER: ITS ANCIENT EVOLUTIONARY ROOTS AND VITAL ROLE IN THE PRESENT
Bill Garrett, PhD, Core Faculty, Philosophy and Religion
School of Education and Liberal Arts

Humans can live without wonder, but we cannot thrive without wonder. Professor Garrett's heartfelt contention is that wonder is grounded in our evolutionary development; we were, literally, born to wonder. Born to wonder - but we can be socialized out of it. This session will discuss how understanding the roots of wonder can help prevent its loss. Interactive question/answer format.

GLOBAL TRENDS IN WORKFORCE MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT
Chuck Piazza, PhD, Associate Professor
School of Management

To remain competitive, organizations are adapting to the global economy with novel approaches to workforce management and development. For managers, staff and employees who aim to be on the cutting-edge of broad-based trends, this session will focus on key challenges. Issues include new organizational structures, modified workplace arrangements and relationships, work-life balance, legal concerns and considerations, workforce diversity, intercultural communication, and "career" as a changing notion.

THE ART OF NEGOTIATION & SETTLEMENT
Justice Daniel Michael Hanlon, Retired California Court of Appeal Justice
Sponsored by the School of Law

Justice Hanlon will cover the strategies for successful negotiation to settle legal disputes in a variety of forums and stages. Among the topics discussed will be the realistic assessment of an attorney's own case, timing, client control and disclosure. Justice Hanlon has presided over both the trial and appellate courts and now is actively involved private mediation. By all accounts he has been known for his intelligence, industry and good sense. MCLE Credit pending approval.
