Course Description

This course studies the complicated political and social forces that shape the research and treatment of cancer.  Who or what directs the "war on cancer?"  What determines the research conducted, treatments advocated, and patients served?  Who is looking at issues of prevention and why or why not?  What is the role of cultural practices such as the pink ribbon campaign and fundraising walks in the treatment of cancer?  The course addresses concerns of cancer risk and both conventional and alternative approaches to understanding cancer.
