About the President
Dr. Mac Powell
John F. Kennedy University
Dr. Mac Powell is the seventh president in the history of John F. Kennedy University. He serves as a Commissioner for the American Council of Education’s Commission on Educational Attainment and was elected to the Senior College and University Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in 2014.
Prior to joining JFK University in 2013, Dr. Powell was President and CEO of WestMed College and Executive Director of the National University Center for Performance Psychology. He is a former Associate Professor of Psychology at National University and founding dean of the National University Golf Academy.
Dr. Powell holds bachelor's degrees in philosophy and sociology; master's degrees in business, sociology, and clinical psychology; and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Missouri. Dr. Powell is a Class “A” member of the Professional Golfers Association of America, has worked with players at all levels of golf, and has spoken around the world in the fields of athletics, coaching, and performance psychology.
Dr. Powell is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and former Subject-Matter Expert for the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Prior to coming to National University, he taught in the psychology departments at Antioch University and California State University-Dominguez Hills, instructing courses in counseling technique, counseling theory, research methods, couples therapy, and group counseling techniques. He spent five years as a social worker and supervisor at a non-profit foster family agency, supervising the care and well-being of foster children in South Central Los Angeles. In addition, he served as the primary mental health practitioner at a residential and out-patient treatment center for women suffering from substance abuse and their families.
In 2011, Dr. Powell participated in the year-long WASC Assessment Leadership Academy and has published and presented articles discussing the past, present, and future of accreditation in American Higher Education. Dr. Powell is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Performance Psychology and the current Chair of the Council of Applied Master’s Programs in Psychology, a national organization of more than 40 institutions advocating for standards at the master’s level in psychology.
Dr. Powell is the author of over thirty articles and three books, including Inner Game: Breaking Golf’s Unbreakable Barriers, The Ball is the Enemy, and the Handbook of Marriage and Family Therapy.
